What startup investing means
Startup investing is putting capital into early-stage private companies in exchange for equity, with the understanding that most investments will fail, returns take many years, and capital can be locked up for a decade or more.
It is not a savings vehicle, a guaranteed return product, or a substitute for liquid investments.
Direct startup investing vs venture funds
- Direct: you write checks into individual companies and manage diligence, follow-on, and risk yourself
- Funds: you commit capital to a manager who builds a portfolio across many companies on your behalf
What an LP is
An LP (limited partner) is an investor in a venture fund. LPs commit capital, receive distributions if and when companies in the portfolio have liquidity events, and bear the downside risk of the fund.
What emerging managers are
Emerging managers are venture investors running their first few institutional funds. They are often closer to operators and overlooked communities than established firms — and they carry the higher risk profile of any first-time strategy.
Venture investing risks
- Total loss of capital is common at the individual company level
- Time horizons typically span 7–12+ years
- Capital is illiquid — you cannot sell positions on demand
- Returns are concentrated in a small number of outcomes
How DVRGNT Ventures thinks about overlooked opportunity
DVRGNT pays attention to founders, markets, and operators that traditional networks systematically miss. That perspective is a research and access advantage — it is not a guarantee of outperformance.
